    Good afternoon,

I am looking for some feedback. I want to take a different direction in my career. I would like to be an Executive Assistant. I would like to know, if I would require any training or taking certain courses. I have 16 years of experience as an Administrative Assistant.

    Thank you

    Judi

Hi Judi. I recommend completing Project Management courses, Legal Communications, Office Management and Event Management. Any courses that would assist in you in applying assertiveness, proper listening techniques and emotional management will be immensely helpful. Knowing how to read people and ask questions is also important. Hope this helps, have a super awesome day.

    Hello Judy:
Go for it!  If you've been an AA for 16 years you may already have a lot of the skills needed as an EA.  Personally, I found it is important to ensure you know Outlook well or whatever email system the office has so you can expertly manage your boss's calendar.  It also helps to be adept at Teams or Zoom or both as a lot of meetings are still virtual.  Good luck!

    Hello Judy,

Meet with your manager, have a very open and honest conversation with them. Let them know you are interested in a career move. Ask them lots of questions about what strengths they see you as having and what areas you need to increase your skill set in. Let them know you are interested in doing special Ad-hoc projects. Or bring to their attention to a more better way of doing something and offer to lead the change (make sure to do your research well before hand). I once introduced the company I was working for to moving to a single travel booking company versus the admins trying to book travel through internet searches. Special Ad-hoc projects are an opportunity for you to either get experience in other areas, learn new skills, meet new people and to learn more about the company. Once people know you are interested in growing and willing to work hard, they will keep you in mind for new opportunities, encourage you and help along the way.
